Development of 3D Building Footprints
2017 - Development of 3D Building Footprints for Ballarat City Council
Ballarat City Council

In 2017, Grace GIS delivered a high-precision 3D building footprint dataset for Ballarat City Council, transforming traditional 2D building outlines into an accurate, elevation-enhanced 3D spatial layer. Using high-resolution LiDAR data, we incorporated detailed height attributes and elevation values into the building geometry, significantly improving spatial accuracy and analytical value.
This dataset now serves as a foundation for advanced urban planning, environmental analysis, and visualisation workflows across the municipality. Its 3D structure supports a wide range of applications, including shadow modelling, growth assessments, infrastructure design, emergency response planning, and integration with emerging technologies such as VR and AR.
By upgrading Ballarat’s building footprints into a modern 3D geospatial layer, Grace GIS helped strengthen the Council’s ability to plan proactively, visualise development scenarios, and make informed decisions using reliable, science-driven spatial information.
Generated using LiDAR-derived elevation modelling and detailed feature extraction.
