GIS-Based Environmental and Vegetation Mapping

Melbourne Water

From 2010 to 2024, Grace GIS delivered a series of environmental and vegetation mapping projects that strengthened Melbourne Water’s ability to manage land, waterways, and ecological assets across the region. Using high-resolution imagery, LiDAR data, and advanced spatial analysis, we mapped a wide range of vegetation types and land management areas; including tree canopy, understory, wetlands, invasive willows, revegetation sites, and maintenance zones.

This work included detailed wetland and waterbody mapping to support ecosystem monitoring, willow mapping across stream networks to guide restoration efforts, and understory assessments to inform habitat and fuel-load management. We also produced spatial datasets identifying revegetation areas, weed control zones, and land under management, helping Melbourne Water track environmental works over time. Most recently, in 2024, we mapped grass-cutting areas across Melbourne Water land to support operational planning and asset maintenance.

Together, these projects provide Melbourne Water with accurate, GIS-ready datasets essential for environmental stewardship, restoration planning, vegetation management, and long-term ecological resilience.
