Green Infrastructure Benchmark Data and Mapping Project

2015 & 2023 - Green Infrastructure Benchmark Data and Mapping Project

Adelaide City Council

In 2015 and again in 2023, Grace GIS delivered comprehensive green infrastructure benchmarking and land use analysis for Adelaide City Council to support long-term environmental planning and climate resilience strategies. The initial 2015 project established Adelaide’s first baseline dataset for green infrastructure, mapping tree canopy, vegetation, open space, and permeable surfaces to provide a clear picture of the city’s ecological assets. These datasets, along with thematic maps and coverage statistics, equipped planners with an evidence-based foundation for sustainable urban design and heat-mitigation initiatives.

In 2023, Grace GIS revisited and expanded this work, updating all green infrastructure layers with modern imagery and refined spatial analysis techniques. We assessed land use changes over the eight-year period, quantified shifts in green cover, and identified priority areas for improvement. The updated benchmarks and analyses help guide policy development, investment planning, and climate adaptation actions across the city.

Together, the 2015 and 2023 projects provide Adelaide with a robust, longitudinal understanding of its green infrastructure, enabling more informed, future-focused decisions that support urban sustainability, liveability, and environmental resilience.

Benchmarking performed using canopy extraction, land-use mapping, and change analysis.
