Green Infrastructure Benchmark Data Mapping

2016 - Green Infrastructure Benchmark Data Mapping for Ballarat City Council

Ballarat City Council

In 2016, Grace GIS supported Ballarat City Council in strengthening its sustainability and climate adaptation planning by delivering comprehensive green infrastructure benchmark datasets. The project involved transforming the Council’s point-based tree data into detailed polygon representations, significantly improving spatial accuracy and enabling more meaningful analysis of canopy extent and distribution.

Using advanced geospatial techniques, we produced refined datasets, thematic maps, and percentage-based statistics that quantified Ballarat’s tree canopy coverage across suburbs and precincts. These outputs provided the Council with a reliable baseline for monitoring urban greening trends, identifying priority areas for investment, and supporting long-term environmental and climate resilience strategies.

The resulting benchmark mapping has since become a critical foundation for evidence-based decision-making, helping Ballarat City Council plan, manage, and enhance its green infrastructure with clarity and confidence.
