Tree Canopy and Hazard Management

From 2020 to 2023, Grace GIS delivered key vegetation management datasets to support Melbourne Water’s environmental planning and asset safety programs. In 2023, we updated the Tree Hazard Management GIS layer, refining tree locations, attributes, and risk indicators to improve maintenance planning, public safety, and infrastructure protection across Melbourne Water-managed land.

Complementing this, we mapped tree canopy extent for 2006 and 2016 using high-resolution imagery and geospatial analysis, providing a decade-long view of vegetation change, canopy loss and gain, and urban ecosystem trends. These insights help Melbourne Water plan restoration works, target environmental initiatives, and strengthen long-term resilience to climate and urban pressures.

Together, these projects provide an integrated evidence base for managing vegetation risk, monitoring canopy change, and supporting sustainable land management across the region.
